Scam Alert: Reps Re-launch Investigation Into CCTV Contract

Posted by Thandiubani on Fri 09th Oct, 2015 - tori.ng

The House have sworn to descend heavily on contractors who take government money and disappear. They say the time for change is here and will not tolerate such behaviour anymore.

The House of Representatives have resolved to re-investigate the contract and the uncompleted installations of the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) around the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and other major cities of the federation.

This decision was reached yesterday when a motion by two House Representatives, Adekoya Adeseun Abdul-Majid and Abiodun James Falake of the APC expressed concern why the last probe by the 7th House was inconclusive. They also noted that ZTE Corporation should be probed to explain why the contract was abandoned.

The House has set up an ad hoc committee to look into the matter. The committee was also mandated to determine all circumstances leading up to the award of the contract in Abuja and Lagos. It will also look into who awarded the contracts between the FCT administration, ministry of internal affairs or the Nigerian police.

The committee is mandated to find out why ZTE Corporation did not fulfill its part of the contract. The lawmakers couldn't understand why the 7th House stalled the matter even after probing the contract. They all concluded that a fresh investigation should be started as the matter poses a serious security risk.

The lawmakers expressed dissatisfaction with ZTE Corporation over its refusal to proceed with installation of the cameras and seeing that it works. They acknowledged the huge role CCTV cameras play in combating crimes. The lawmakers charged the committee to do a thorough job.
