10 People Injured in Ondo NURTW Crisis

Posted by Thandiubani on Thu 22nd Oct, 2015 - tori.ng

Nearly 10 people have been injured in Ondo state in a recent crisis involving members of NURTW following a leadership tussle for the chairmanship of the union.

Almost 10 people were seriously injured when members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) clashed over an attempt by a faction of the union to take over the leadership in Owu, Owo local government area of Ondo State.

The crisis caused commercial activities to completely shutdown for almost four hours, while many ran away for their dear lives.

According to a reliable source, the crisis is believed to have been sponsored by some politicians in the area. The source stated that one "Jungunnu" declared himself the new chairman of the union in the town. The man who led thugs to the Akure Car Park attacked the union leaders which started the fight. If not for the intervention of mobile policemen, the fight would have resulted in the deaths and destruction of valuable property.

The current NURTW chairman of Ondo council, Mr. Kolade Jasper told supporters that he is still the chairman as he has not received any letter from the national leaders to vacate the position.

He called Jungunnu's action as unacceptable, noting that the said Jungunnu is not a member of the union. Jasper called on the state governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko to intervene in the crisis.

The police PPRO in the state, Mr. Femi Joseph said the police is working hard to bring back normalcy and settle the matter amicably.
