A member of the house of representatives, Rep. Solomon Adaelu has called on the House to sanction security agencies who have little or no regard for the lives of Nigerians.
The House of Representatives on Thursday expressed dismay at which security operatives maltreat Nigerians.
Moving the motion on the floor, Rep. Solomon Adaelu (PDP-Abia) noted that the primary function of the security agencies was to protect lives and properties of Nigerians as well as maintain law and order. Instead, Nigerians witness brutality, harassment, extra-judicial killings and excessive use of force in the hands of security operatives.
He noted instances where citizens have been killed by trigger-happy policemen and called for immediate action from the house to arrest the issue.
“The trend has become more alarming in recent time as security agents use their firearms indiscriminately and unlawfully on unarmed Nigerians," he said.
He bemoaned that fact that our security personnels instead of upholding the law, flagrantly disregard it. The lawmaker warned that if this is not checked, the excesses might spiral out of control and could lead to breakdown of law and order.
Adaelu urged the security agencies to work according to the law and minimize the use of force and coercion. He praised them for their patriotic discharge of their duties and in maintaining law and order.
