Ike Ekweremadu and wife
Nigeria's House of Representatives has asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerian High Commission in the United Kingdom to ensure that Senator Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, get fair hearing in the case of alleged conspiracy to harvest David Ukpo’s kidney for their ailing daughter in the United Kingdom, according to Daily Trust.
They couple were last Thursday charged and detained for the offence in the UK.
The House also summoned the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama; the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Immigration Service and the Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission to brief its relevant committees on the issue.
The resolutions followed the adoption of a motion by Abdullahi Saad Abdulkadir (Bauchi State) expressed concerns over the couple’s arrest and detention by UK metropolitan police over alleged offences relating to human trafficking and exploitation.
Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, said he had asked the Nigerian High Commissioner to avail Ekweremadu and his family all necessary defence and support he would need to defend himself.
“He (High Commissioner) has done all that needs to be done. The Queen’s Counsel has been made available to Ekweremadu. He has access to him”, he said.
