A fire outbreak destroyed property worth millions of naira in a building in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Thursday evening.

The incident occurred around 3:56 pm in a structure located adjacent to Ile-Anu Wofem Church behind the Industrial Training Fund in the Asa-Dam area of the city.

The building comprised three-bedroom flats and a room-and-parlour self-contained apartment.

The fire damaged three bedrooms before firefighters arrived at the scene.

The delay in reporting the incident to the fire service meant the flames had already spread significantly by the time crews reached the location.

However, through prompt professional action, firefighters managed to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to an adjoining block of self-contained apartments that stood nearby.

Preliminary investigation suggests a power surge caused the fire, igniting combustible materials within the affected section of the building.

The Chief Fire Officer of the state fire service, CFO Alabi Muhammed, has advised residents to have their electrical installations regularly inspected and maintained by qualified professionals.

He also urged the public to contact the fire service immediately upon noticing a fire, stressing that early notification gives firefighters better chances to control the situation before it escalates beyond containment.
